Brigid`s Way is a WALKING pilgrimage over 3 counties. Distance each day will vary from 6 to 14 miles or 10 to 24 kms. Walking between 5 to 6 hours each day with intermittent rests. Please be aware this does require a MODERATE level of fitness and stamina, so please consider this before booking your place. Training in advance is advised. The option to join for one or two days is also available.

The Walking Route is mostly on very small ‘L’ roads with some routes through forest, along the canal and across the Curragh of Kildare.

The best footwear to use for walking on roads is strong trainers (broken in before you start).  Hiking boots are not suitable for walking on roads.

 

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF PILGRIMAGE

If you are taking part in the pilgrimage for more than one day it might be best to travel to Dundalk by public transport.  The following options are available.

Bus Eireann

From Dublin the 100X bus leaves from outside the Customs House Quay daily, near the bus depot on the hour, every hour from 7am in the morning until 10pm at night. (www.buseireann.ie)

Translink

From Belfast the 8.00am train leaves Belfast Central Station and arrives in Dundalk at 09.15am, however please check with www.translink.co.uk

Train

Leaves Dublin Connolly Station at 07.35am or 09.30am (www.irishrail.ie)

If you are travelling to Dundalk there will be a Minibus which will bring pilgrims to Faughart, details of this will be sent in the final booking letter.

People wishing to join the Pilgrimage at Faughart Shrine

From Dublin, Drogheda and all points south of Dundalk

 

Take exit 18 from M1 going north take the very first exit onto L71000 follow this road for approx 1 mile and you will see Faughart shrine on the left-hand side car park there

 

From M1 going south

Take exit 18 and go through the small roundabout on to a small roundabout Take the second exit from this on to the large Ballymacscanlon roundabout take the 4th exit from the roundabout cross the bridge exit onto L71000 follow this road for approx 1 mile and you will see Faughart shrine on the left-hand side. Car park there.

 

From Monaghan /Castleblayney

Take exit 18 from M1 going north

Take the very first exit onto L71000 follow this road for approx. 1 mile and you will see Faughart shrine on the left-hand side Car park there

 

From Carlingford

Take the road to Dundalk until you come to the Ballymascanlon roundabout then take the 3rd exit from the roundabout, cross the bridge, exit onto L71000 follow this road for approx. 1 mile   and you will see Faughart shrine on the left-hand side Car park there

 Do not leave handbags or other valuables visible in your car
